Nyack Hospital’s October Event: Breast Health Awareness–the 7th Annual Celebration

The Palisades Center was a sea of pink on Sunday, October 1st as The Breast Center at Nyack Hospital hosted their Annual Breast Health Awareness event. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the event’s line dancers kicked off the day and warmed up the crowds before the inspiring fashion show began. The fashion show featured survivors and their supporters–all styled by Lord & Taylor. The fashion show was emceed by guest host Karen “Duff” Duffy who also unveiled her new book and provided a special pre-sale opportunity for guests as part of the health fair. It was an incredible way to start the month of October and motivate women to be advocates for their breast health. Do it for you! Do it today!

The Breast Center at Nyack Hospital wants to share important reminders and facts regarding breast health, how to be proactive, and other informative points:

-Women generally know they should start getting screened for breast cancer at some point, but the details of screening can be confusing. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, take some time to learn about breast cancer screening.

-On average for women, there is a 12% chance of developing breast cancer in your lifetime. Some factors that contribute to risk cannot be changed, these include age, sex, and genetics. Other risk factors are in your hands.

-Be proactive. Reduce risk. Here are some steps you can take to reduce your risk:

  • Make a mammogram appointment each year after you turn 40 years old.
  • Consume a nutritious and low-fat diet with lots of fruits and veggies.
  • Exercise regularly and stay active.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Limit alcohol consumption.
  • Quit smoking!
